MikeNet / Soundcheck

Find where your mic stops working.

Start with the message you see. Changing every sound setting at once makes the cause harder to find.

No permission prompt, or access denied

Press the recording button to request access. MikeNet never opens the microphone just because you visit the page. If you previously blocked access, inspect this site’s microphone permission in the browser’s site settings. A prompt left unanswered can remain pending; cancel the recording request in MikeNet if you do not want to continue.

Also check whether the operating system allows your browser to use a microphone. On a managed school or work device, an administrator may control access. This site cannot override that policy.

No microphone found

Check the connection and any hardware mute switch. For a Bluetooth headset, confirm it is connected as an audio input, not only a playback device. Look for the device in the system’s sound input list. If the operating system cannot see it, a website will not repair that connection.

After reconnecting a device, cancel any pending test and try again. Device names may be hidden until you allow microphone access; “default” does not prove which physical mic is selected.

The device exists but cannot be opened

Close another application that may have exclusive access to the input, reconnect the device and retry. The same browser error can have several causes. MikeNet reports the access failure but cannot inspect your audio driver or identify the application holding a device.

The recording completes, but you hear silence

  1. Check the soundcheck’s selected input and the device’s mute state.
  2. Record your normal voice again. A meter or nonzero digital reading establishes that the browser captured a signal, not that it was your voice.
  3. Check the playback device and listening volume. A good recording played to disconnected headphones can appear silent.
  4. If there is still no signal, run your operating system’s own microphone test. That separates a system-level problem from this browser session.

It works here, but not in Zoom, Discord or another app

Select the same input in the other application. Then inspect its permission, mute, input volume, voice activation and processing settings. Use its own test call or recording feature. MikeNet cannot guarantee the same result in another app because it does not control that app’s capture path.

The browser does not support the recorder

MikeNet’s recorder needs a secure page, microphone capture, Web Audio and AudioWorklet. Use a current browser with those features. A browser can play audio yet lack the capture path this soundcheck needs. You can still read these guides without granting access.
